We are examining the older son’s response to his father’s reconciliation with his wayward, undeserving younger brother. This older son is full of anger and contempt. And this anger and contempt stems from pride. The older brother believed himself to be faithful and resented his father for showing mercy to someone who had not shown himself to be as faithful as he was.
