The annual conference at Grace Church (now going by Pillar of Truth Conference) will take place this September 21-24, 2023.

It was in Heidelberg, Germany, on September 4, 1517, that Martin Luther first laid down the core principle that subverted the entire Roman Catholic system and rewrote the narrative of church history.

The principle at the heart of his critique of the popular theology that informed common church experience is called the “theology of the cross,” in contrast to the “theology of glory.”

According to the theology of the cross, God’s greatest revelation of Himself is in the cross of Jesus Christ, an event which the world considers, at the very least, to be a mistake, and more commonly, to be utter foolishness and the height of failure.

In reality, however, the weakness of the cross demonstrates the power and wisdom of God; and the One who died on the cross has become, to all who believe, wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification and redemption (1 Cor. 1:24, 30).

Christians today are in desperate need of recovering this core principle, which was the heart and soul of the Protestant Reformation. Inherent in the theology of the cross is the power and wisdom of God, which subverts natural, human expectation, grounds theology and church ministry in biblical revelation, and sets a course of faithfulness and fruitfulness for the Christian life.

The cross is not only the power of God for salvation, it is also the wisdom of God for all of life and ministry.

Two veteran pastors (and good friends) — Travis Allen and Don Green — who have had front-row seats and an “insider” perspective of Big Eva — are coming together to address this important theme, provide a clear critique, and point the way forward for Christian faithfulness and fruitfulness.

PASTOR TRAVIS ALLEN

Raised in Golden, CO, Travis joined the military in 1988, where God regenerated him to new life and faith in Christ in 1990. He met and married Melinda in 1993, and God has given them five wonderful children: Nicolas, Leah, Jesse, Scott, and Cali.

Travis was educated for pastoral ministry (The College at Southeastern, B.A., 1997; The Master’s Seminary, M.Div., 2006), and further prepared by working at Grace to You and ministering at Grace Community Church (ordination, 2012).

Now the teaching pastor at Grace Church (since 2014), Travis equips the saints for the work of ministry (Eph. 4:12). His aim is to proclaim Jesus Christ, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so he may do his part in presenting everyone mature in Christ (Col. 1:28).

PASTOR DON GREEN

Don brings a diverse background to the pastorate. He graduated from Indiana University Law School and was a litigation attorney in Chicago for several years before leaving his practice to pursue ministry training.

He completed his Master of Divinity and Master of Theology degrees, which led to academic work as a Greek for pastoral ministry. Don is ordained by Grace Community Church in Sun Valley, California. He pastored GraceLife, served as the Managing Director of Grace to You.

A clear and passionate Bible teacher, as well as a personal and loving shepherd, Don has preached at churches and conferences around the world, and published Biblical books and articles.

Don’s wife, Nancy, was a pastor’s daughter before taking a remarkable step of faith by marrying an attorney in 1988. The happy marriage has produced six children.

DAVID WHEATON

David came to saving faith in Christ in his early twenties while he was competing on the professional tennis tour. He began hosting Beyond Sports in 2002, and then two years later, changed the format to what The Christian Worldview is today. David will be interviewing Don & Travis during a session of the conference.

A small variety of food trucks will be available in the lower parking lot on Saturday. They all do have credit card readers but cash is always a good backup for failing technology, if you don’t want to miss whatever mouthwatering delights they have to offer.
