John questions the motives of his followers
John’s questioning of the people who came to be baptized is penetrating. It gets into the heart of their thinking; it causes them to examine their motives. People are religious for all the wrong reasons. When the Bible tells us that only a few will be saved. God will only save those who come to him with a repentant heart, driven by the motives of repentance, hating sin on the one hand, longing for righteousness on the other.
